The Quiet Definition of Joy
I often think we misunderstand where happiness lives.
We are encouraged to look for it in the big moments: achievements, milestones, celebrations and applause. Yet some of the deepest joy arrives so quietly that we almost overlook it.
For me, one of those moments happens most days.
Oscar will often be busy sniffing around the decking in our back garden while I quietly walk towards the front drive. He is completely absorbed in his own little world until, all of a sudden, he realises his human is waiting for him.
The transformation is instant.
His head lifts. His ears prick. Then he runs towards me with the enthusiasm of an excited puppy, as though we have been apart for days rather than a few moments.
Every single time, it makes me smile.
Watching him experience such uncomplicated happiness reminds me that joy is often found in the simplest moments. Not because something extraordinary has happened, but because love has quietly recognised love.
It also reminds me that we are all wired differently.
What fills one person’s heart may mean very little to someone else. Some people find joy climbing mountains. Others find it building businesses, travelling the world or standing on a stage.
I find it watching a little Big dog running towards me with complete trust and excitement.
Perhaps happiness is less about searching for the biggest moments and more about noticing the small ones that are already waiting for us.
The older I live, I become, the more I believe joy rarely announces itself loudly.
It arrives quietly.
In familiar places.
In ordinary moments.
In the sound of paws running towards someone they love.
For me, that is more than enough.
Peace be with you.
