🧡 Five Years Ago Today, My Life Changed Forever ❤️
Five years ago today, on 26 July 2021, I brought home an eight‑week‑old German Shepherd puppy called Oscar. It is difficult now to imagine my life without him, yet on that day neither of us understood the journey we were about to begin.
I still smile when I look at the photograph taken that afternoon. I am wearing a face mask, carefully carrying a tiny puppy with oversized paws and a tongue that seemed far too large for his little face. It felt wonderfully awkward because I had never held a puppy before. Oscar cried throughout the journey home after being separated from his mother, Missy. He was frightened and uncertain, and all I could do was reassure him that he was safe.
When we arrived home, I gently placed him in the garden. He seemed to grow overnight. He ran across the back garden and hid beneath my late father’s old garden bench. I cannot fully explain why, but in that quiet moment I felt an unexpected sense of comfort. It was as though my father was somehow part of Oscar’s welcome home. It remains one of the memories I cherish most.
If anyone had told me then that I would one day walk confidently beside this magnificent German Shepherd through Yorkshire’s woods and fields, I would have struggled to believe them. During that first year I was completely out of my depth. We took our first holiday together to Long Preston only a few weeks after Oscar came home. I had a broken finger, an energetic puppy and absolutely no experience of ‘owning’ a German Shepherd. There were more than a few embarrassing falls and many moments when I questioned whether I was doing anything right.
The truth is that Oscar and I learned together. He was learning to trust a new human. I was learning how to become the guardian he deserved. Day by day, walk by walk, we found our rhythm. Somewhere along the way, without either of us noticing, we became a team.
Today we walk with a quiet confidence that can only be built over time. There is a gentle ease between us that comes from complete trust. People often stop to admire Oscar and tell me how beautiful he is. I always smile and thank them because they are seeing far more than a handsome German Shepherd. They are seeing five years of companionship, patience, loyalty and unconditional love.
To say that Oscar opened my heart and gave me hope would be an understatement. He became my family. There is not a day that passes when I do not thank him for coming into my life. I also quietly thank my Paa in heaven and, in my own way, Lord Krishna, for sending me the most perfectly matched companion I could ever have wished for.
Five years ago, I thought I was bringing home a puppy and he became my family.
Happy fifth Gotcha Day, Oscar. Thank you for choosing me as much as I chose you. We have shared an extraordinary journey together, and I sense that the best chapters are still to come.
